• Flexible Seating

We are excited to be able to offer your child the opportunity to be a part of a flexible seating classroom this year!

    Flexible Seating

    What is flexible seating?

Flexible seating is a type of classroom environment that has replaced traditional desks and chairs with a variety of seating arrangements. Students have the opportunity to choose the seating arrangement that is best for their learning. Flexible seating encourages collaboration and communication which are necessary skills for the 21st century classroom.

    Why use flexible seating?

The traditional classroom setting is simply not kid friendly! No one wants to sit still for a long period of time in a chair – especially not children. Everyone has a favorite place or way of sitting while they work. Flexible seating encourages good decision making and allows students to use a working space that is best for them.

How to Help Your Child With Flexible Seating

    Questions to ask your child:

    • Where did you sit today?
    • Who did you sit next to?
    • Were you able to focus and get your work done?
    • Did you like your seating choice? Why? Why not?
    • Where are you going to sit tomorrow?

    Suggestions for your child:

    • Try sitting somewhere where you haven’t sat before.
    • Try surrounding yourself with other students that are focused and get their work done.
    • Always think about how well you worked in your seat and make good choices.

    Expectations for Flexible Seating

    • Students are free to choose where they sit when they are respectful, safe, and responsible.
    • Students can sit where they are focused, productive, and comfortable.
    • If a spot does not work for them, they can move so they can be successful.
    • Students will keep their space clean and organized.
    • An adult can move anyone at anytime.
