Reading Strategies
Quick Navigation: Accuracy - Fluency - Comprehension - Expanded Vocabulary - Glossary
The resources provided are based on our classroom Daily 5 system. All of these strategies follow Daily 5's CAFE (Comprehension, Accuracy, Fluency, Expanded Vocabulary) model, our Wonder's Reading Curriculum, and First-Grade Common Core State Standards. You can start from the top of any of the lists and help your child work on one strategy at a time. All strategies are great to practice and you cannot go wrong with whichever one you choose.
- Would you like to help your child continue to build strong reading skills?
- This page is dedicated to providing resources to help meet your child's needs in reading. Each child has different strengths and needs. Focusing on specific strategies can help children to improve their reading. It is important not to overwhelm children with an abundance of strategies all at once. Each strategy takes time to learn and practice.
- Accuracy and Fluency are "constrained" skills.
- Once they are mastered, there is little need to continue to focus on them. Accuracy is typically an area where first-graders will focus for awhile; however, they may also branch into other areas as well!
- Comprehension and Expanded Vocabulary are "unconstrained" skills.
- These skills can forever be practiced and strengthened. Even as adults!

"Constrained" Skills
-
Does your child struggle to read the words fluently (with expression)?
Please note: When referring to fluency, the focus is to read with phrasing and prosody, not speed. When referencing speed, students may adjust their reading rate to match their needs to comprehend text (ex. slow to process new information; faster for entertainment). A lack in fluency is often an indicator that another skill is missing, so if your child continues to struggle, please reference Accuracy.
The below strategies can help your child build fluency.
